#About Middle Name Dance Band

Never far from the centre of the action in the Brisbane jazz/club scene, Megan Christensen, Sam Stosuur and Sampology make-up Middle Name Dance Band. The three groovers are all involved in separate musical endeavours, but this project is the “refreshing dance break release” their souls cried out for. After first jamming together in early 2018, the band’s foundation was built on a friendship which has kept them together ever since.

Live, the trio dominate the dance floor with their keys, bass and drum machine rhythms, often joined by Tristan Rogers on trumpet and the occasional guest vocalist. “Our music focuses on bright boogie and disco, influenced by jazz, brazillian vibes and soul.”

Their vinyl releases have been well-received locally and off-shore, where they’ve received airplay from Gilles Peterson (UK) and Neil Bopperson (FR). Now, joining #TheBIGSOUND50 the band are ready to officially introduce themselves to the Australian music industry

“We're specifically hoping to peak interest from the programmers of some of our favourite Australian festivals, generate sync opportunities and connect with like-minded international folk to explore new frontiers when borders open and allow us to travel to other magical music places.”

“There's so many talented local artists that have been building a soulful Australian movement and we think this is the next wave of the Australian live scene.”

#About

Middle Name Dance Band is the trio of Sampology, Megan Christensen and Sam Stosuur. The collaborative project was intended as a one-off studio project for the 2018-released ‘Middle Name Dance Tracks Vol. 1’. Reflecting the bubbling Brisbane movement of the cross-pollination between the club and jazz/soul communities, the 5-track EP gained the attention of specialist radio hosts, influential curators and programmers. Support for the debut EP came from Gilles Peterson, BBC 6, BBC 4, CC Disco, Harvey Sutherland, and RTR.

‘Middle Name Dance Tracks Vol. 2’ was released in April 2020. It was featured in Bandcamp’s Best 12” Singles March - May 2020; received a triple j Unearthed add for ‘Love Bite’ and has been supported by BBC 6, NTS, Rinse FM, FBi and 3RRR.
