Hip hop artist Dallas Woods is a Menang Noongar man, growing up in Wyndham in the East Kimberly (WA). His breakout track, ‘9 Times Out of 10’, saw him emerge as a voice of truth, speaking out against the high rates of indigenous incarceration in Australia. Over a year spent on tour with Baker Boy saw the pair collaborate, perform and travel across the country together, building upon their already strong bond. In September this year, both rappers found a true dream team, joining forces with Sampha the Great to release ‘Better Days’, a multi-lingual celebration of strength in dark times and victory against the odds. “My music is a reflection of my personality and truths mixed with freedom of speech, and movement, with some conscious, cheeky bars with high end production and beats.”
Dallas has been releasing music for three years, but it’s always been a part of his life.
“Music did so much for me growing up, I know I'm not alone on that… Seeing the power and magic [it could] provide - I always wanted to be a part of that.”
His live show is full of honesty, “hard-hitting beats wrapped up with whole lotta love, sweat and energy”.
“I love being able to tell my story and connect with other humans through lived experiences.”
Joining #TheBIGSOUND50, he hopes he’ll be able to network with and get advice from industry mob and other creatives. “I want to be known for my technique, writing and flex on gorgeous instrumentals. Awards would be nice, but I really just want to achieve respect from music lovers and other creatives.”
During the pandemic, the E-K MC says he’s found positivity through discovering new ways to collaborate with creatives, using technology to work virtually. “[I’ve been] listening to all the protest music to push change in the right direction for POC and for all the tribes and clans for this country.” He hopes that as we come through to the other side, some of the lessons from lockdown stick. “I want to see the trend of people slowing down, finding family, exercising, and focusing on physical and mental health."
